Manchester United lifted the Community Shield after beating Chelsea 3-0 in a penalty shoot-out at Wembley.
Ryan Giggs gave the Premiership champions the lead on 35 minutes, but Chelsea’s new signing Florent Malouda levelled just before the break when he shrugged off a challenge from Rio Ferdinand to finish neatly. The game finished 0-0 at full-time and with no extra time scheduled to be played, it was time for penalties.
United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar produced a hat-trick of penalty saves from Claudio Pizarro, Frank Lampard and Shaun Wright-Phillips, while Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney all scored from the spot to give Sir Alex Ferguson’s side their first silverware of the season.
Derby County defender Claude Davis will be assessed over the next few days after he suffered a hamstring strain.
Davis lasted 62 minutes of Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Espanyol before picking up the injury. The £3million signing from Sheffield United missed the recent pre-season games against Nottingham Forest and Crewe due to a virus.
Harry Redknapp has denied reports that he has made a bid to bring Yakubu back to Portsmouth.
The Middlesbrough striker has been linked with a host of clubs including Birmingham City, and although Redknapp is still a fan of the powerful Nigerian, he has not made an approach.
“I like Yak, I signed him the first time round at Portsmouth and he was a good player for me,” Redknapp told Sky Sports News.
Reports from Spain suggest that Real Madrid have launched a massive £27million double bid for Chelsea duo Arjen Robben and Michael Ballack.
Robben has been strongly linked with a move to the Spanish giants over the past few weeks, and it now looks as if Michael Ballack could be joining the Dutchman as part of a joint deal.
Tottenham Hotspur fans will be left gutted this evening after Birmingham City announced that they have cancelled the transfer of Hossam Ghaly.
The news surrounding the cancellation of the deal so far is short in detail, the only reason given is for “footballing reasons”, whatever that might be. Surely Bruce knew who he has signing and who Ghaly knew who he is signing for.
